COLUMBUS, Ohio — Two people remained hospitalized Thursday following a fiery, wrong-way crash along Interstate 270.

The wreck happened early Saturday morning on I-270 near Broad Street, 10TV's Glenn McEntyre reported.

At about 1 a.m., emergency dispatchers were flooded with 911 calls from freeway motorists who spotted a van traveling north in the southbound lanes.

More 911 calls were made after the van crashed head-on with another vehicle.  One of the calls came from a passing motorist who stopped and pulled the driver from the burning van.

The caller said the driver, who smelled of alcohol, had no idea what had happened.

"He thought he was still at a place called Screamin' Willies, and he also asked me if he'd been driving since he'd been lying there," the caller said.

Police identified the driver as John Mirarchi, 26, of Hilliard.  They said he is a musician who had performed at Screamin' Willies bar, located off Brice Road, before the wreck, McEntyre reported.

While they suspect alcohol was a factor, police were awaiting results of blood-alcohol tests before filing charges, McEntyre reported.

Mirarchi and the other driver were taken to hospitals after the crash, and they were listed in fair condition as of Wednesday.
