3 In the early days of the talkies, Hollywood made movies with hard-edged, unsentimental attitudes toward men, women, sex, substance abuse, poverty, corruption and any number of topics brought into harsh relief by the Depression. By the mid-1930s, this era was over, as a censorious production code was enforced. Watching many of those early-'30s movies now is a revelation -- they're so adult, blunt and honest they make today's romcoms look like cartoons made by nap-deprived children.
