Frugal Village: Remove hairspray residue

Dear Sara: I had a longterm house guest, who was an abundant user of hairspray. When she moved out recently, I noticed that the bathroom door, which she always stood in front of to do her hair, is coated with the sticky residue from her hairspray. The door is a stained polyresin door, and I'm unsure as to how to get the residue off without ruining the finish. Can you suggest any solvents? Thank you. —  Debbie K., email Dear Dewey: Wash your towels alone (without any other articles of clothing), in hot water at the highest water level, and use baking soda, washing soda, borax or Charlie's Soap (www.charliesoap.com) instead of your usual laundry detergent. Use 1⁄4 cup (up to a cup if you're able to) vinegar in your rinse cycle — using the fabric softener reservoir — and a double rinse cycle. Then dry. If you find that the towels still have buildup and are still quite scratchy, continue to launder with the above products. It might take a couple of washes to remove all the residue. You might need to check the hardness of your water, too. Dear Anne: For holiday storage, I really like giant popcorn tins, plastic coffee canisters, large plastic kitty litter buckets and shoe boxes. The plastic bags with zippers that comforters come in work well for garland, wreaths and stockings, too. I did invest in some plastic totes. You can find the Christmas-themed totes and even plastic laundry baskets on sale after Christmas. Keep a few snack or appetizer recipes on hand. You can whip something together in no time rather than ordering takeout. For example, you might want pizza or doughnuts. Try making cinnamon tortilla strips. Cut tortillas into strips (a pizza cutter works well) and spread a small amount of butter on top, or spray with cooking oil. Then sprinkle the tortillas with cinnamon and sugar and put them in a 350-degree oven for five minutes. You can also fry a few plain tortilla strips in oil until they're light golden-brown. (Fry a few at a time.) Drain the strips briefly on paper towels, then drag each of them through a sugar-and-cinnamon mixture. Preheat the oven at 400 degrees F. I placed a piece of parchment paper the size of my pan on the counter and sprayed it with Pam. I then rolled out my square pizza crust. I placed the cheese sticks on the dough, spaced evenly apart, and cut the dough into individual strips. I rolled the cheese up in the dough, then cut and pinched the ends so as to make sure that no cheese was peeking out.

Homemade Flea Bath for Dogs

Flea season can come and home and often times it can come and stay! Getting rid of fleas is time consuming and expensive but there are some simple things to do to help get rid of fleas and prevent fleas from coming back. Homemade flea baths for dogs (and cats) are a great way to relieve their itching and eliminate these creatures at a fraction of the cost that specialty groomers charge.

When you shampoo your pet, wash around the neck first to keep fleas away from the animal’s head. Before bathing, plug the dog’s ears with cotton balls and put a dab of mineral oil in the eyes.

1. Dry Skin Shampoo Flea Bath Recipe:

1/3 Cup Glycerin Mix in a liter bottle or a large shampoo bottle and be sure to always shake the solution before use to mix the glycerin thoroughly.

2. Waterless Flea Bath

Many dogs have their skin conditions aggravated by frequent bathing. To give dogs a waterless bath, sprinkle on baking soda and brush off the excess and then use a flea comb.

3. Lemon Flea Bath

Lemons and Water are Needed

Directions: Bring water to a boil in a medium saucepan. Add slices of lemon and steep overnight. Take out the lemons and pour the flea dip into a spray bottle. Before putting the flea dip on the pet, shampoo the pet with a mild pet shampoo. This will eliminate many of the fleas. Comb the pet to remove additional fleas. Spray the lemon mixture on the pet, making sure to apply under the armpits, belly, tail and behind the ears. Be careful not to spray near the eyes. Lemon contains limonene, a chemical that kills and repels fleas. It also soothes irritated skin. Reapply often.

4. The Herbal Flea Bath

Rosemary and Water

Directions: Put 2 cups of rosemary into 2 pints of boiling water. Steep the rosemary for 30 minutes. Strain the liquid and discard the herbs. Add enough water to the strained liquid to make a gallon of flea dip. Saturate the pet with the flea dip. Do not rinse off, but let the dip dry normally. This flea dip also repels ticks.

5. Essential Oils For Flea Control

Lavender Oil Starting with 10 ml of almond oil, add 10 drops of lavender and five drops of cedar wood. Shake well. Apply one to two drops of the oil to the pet and massage into the skin. Reapply twice a week. The oils heal irritated skin, soothe the skin, and repel the fleas.

If you are looking for an over-the-counter product, try a flea shampoo that contains pyrethrum or citrus oil as these additives are less toxic than harsh chemicals and usually very effective.
