At 19, interior designer's business up and running

Sam Allen may only be 19 years old, but his love and appreciation for interior design came at an early age.

The Weston native grew up with his interior designer mother, Leslie. She brought him to clients' houses with her after school and introduced him to the world of home decorating.

"She had been an editor for multiple home magazines, so I was always at photo shoots with her," he said. "I was always around a creative household."

Allen graduated from Weston High School in 2010 and now owns his interior design business, Sam Allen Interiors .

Allen's work experience as an interior designer reads just as long as someone twice his age. He interned at Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia prior to starting his senior year of high school. He said he instantly knew this is what he wanted to do when he first visited the company's Norwalk office.

He said the internship prepared him for the business side of interior design. He learned about branding, for example, and showed him a larger view of business opportunities beyond interior design.

Allen also spent his formative teenage years working at home furniture and furnishing store Dovecote in Westport. He assisted in designing rooms for the company and credits them for teaching him the ins and outs of the business.

"Luckily, Dovecote prepared me and was my platform to get recognized and be taken seriously," he said. "That's how I was able to start my own design firm."

Sarah Kaplan, owner of Dovecote, praised Allen for his passion and enthusiasm for design.

"He also has great instincts for the way a room should look, and he brings humor to everything that he does," Kaplan said in an email statement.

There is a light touch of cheerfulness in Allen's work, but he avoids whimsy, he said. There is a difference between a happy room and a whimsical one, he said.

"Depending on the client or the room or the mood that they're trying to evoke, it could be happy, but then I do more sophisticated rooms. I'm not going to have a dining room that is orange," he said. "It's their house, it's their room. They have to love it. I will try to steer them toward something I know they want.

"I bring a much, much younger eye to the table when it comes to decorating a room," he said. "They're seeing a much- younger point of view, which I think is refreshing and different, and helps them visualize things that they can't 100 percent visualize on their own.

Microsoft Romania Office Interior Design

The local headquarter of the biggest software producer is a big, creative and very colorful space. “Workspace Advantage” is how the company calls the concept of attempting to functionally use as much space as possible from a certain building. Microsoft Romania rented 2.450 sq meters in the southern tower of the City Gate building. That space can accommodate up to 190 employees, even though there are offices for only 121. The company moved in the new headquarter in January 2010 and it currently has 125-130 employees.

This is possible because of the company’s policy that allows employees to also work from home or from the client’s or partner’s place. Another interesting fact is that the company is trying to implement a system that would require employees to change their workspace as frequently as possible. Around 60% of the employees often change their workplace while the others have a stable office. The headquarter features a restaurant area where employees can eat, 16 conference rooms as well as several rooms called “Phone Both” where employees can use their phones without disturbing the others.
