A fond farewell to a familiar voice | The Voice-Tribune

Earlier this week, Lynda Lambert posted a bittersweet status update on her Facebook page: “How do you say goodbye to someone you’ve worked with every day for 14 years and who is one of your dearest friends?” she wrote after learning that her colleague Aaron Miller is leaving his job as a radio DJ to serve as a program manager for Leadership Louisville.

Aaron began his career in radio in 1994 and has spent the last 12 years co-hosting the Lambert & Lindsey show on 102.3 The Max with George Lindsey and Lynda (one of The Voice’s Best Dressed nominees). The trio is best known for their weekday morning show and their incredibly giving spirits. They’re also very funny people.

Aaron Miller will be such an asset to Leadership Louisville, but he’ll definitely be missed around the Mainline Broadcasting offices downtown. “I’m very excited about the new position. I’m very sad about leaving,” he told me.

Aaron, who starts on Monday, June 27, will work alongside a crew that includes Vikki Stone, who begins her role as a program manager in July. “(Leadership Louisville) is such a neat organization and a unique organization. They’re so respected in the community. This is a chance to grow a bit and branch out,” Aaron said.

“We wish him much success and happiness in this next chapter of his life,” Lynda wrote in her Facebook post, before cracking: “Now, who’s going to get my coffee every morning?”

Good Night

More than 23,300 people came out for the return of night racing at Churchill Downs, despite a few quick-hit rain showers. The Louisville Crashers kept the party jumping in the paddock until DJ Charlie Chan took over followed by Darryl “DMC” McDaniels, formerly of Run DMC.

The Voice-Tribune crew and friends packed the Stakes Room and, says Lori Kommor, “We had such a blast.” The evening included a birthday celebration for Julia Carstanjen, complete with cake and a rendition of that famous song written long ago by Louisville natives and siblings Patty and Mildred Hill in 1893.

There were lots of familiar faces all around the track, including in the Turf Club, which was as happening as ever. I love that Churchill Downs is now offering a Junior Turf Club Membership to young professionals at a discounted rate (call 502.636.4467 for more info).

I spent the night serving as the on-camera entertainment correspondent for Churchill Downs, which is always a ball, but this time I also hosted a game called Bet or No Bet, presented by Thorntons. Essentially, you sign up to be one of four contestants who get the choice to walk away with a $100 Thorntons gift card or make a $1,000 bet on the horse of your choice during a designated race. After each contestant chose to place the bet, and three of the four won – ! – and walked away anywhere from $1,700 to $5,800 richer than when they’d come to the track, John Asher joked that I was under investigation. I think we were both a little amazed at how high I can jump in high heels. I believe I was as excited as, if not more than, the winners, and couldn’t contain myself, especially when one of the horses won by a nose.
