Manning was sacked only 16 times last season. But he is truly a master at diagnosing pass-rushers pre-snap, feeling pressure and getting the ball out of his hands before being sacked. He made below-average pass protection look quite good. However, with poor play from his offensive line, the Colts were not able to throw deep as often or as well as they have in years past. He has a lot of movable pieces at his disposal and is able to maximize what a defense gives him. For what felt like the first time in a decade, the Indianapolis Colts were no longer one of the NFL ’s true powerhouses. They failed to win 12 games for the first time since the 2002 season, and had the rest of the AFC South not had such a down year (combined record of 20-28), they might have struggled to make the playoffs.

Castonzo isn’t an aggressive mauler in the running game, nor does he have the superior quickness of some elite LTs, but he’s a very intelligent technician with good size and long arms to slow down pass rushers. The Colts were in desperate need of depth and versatility at tackle, and with Castonzo they have a player who can start immediately on either end of the line.

Polian scores again with Ijalana, another experienced lineman with the ability to play inside or outside. At 6-3, he’s built more like a guard, but his quick feet and long arms allow him to move outside to tackle when need be. He should have no trouble blocking pass rushers on the right side, but lacks the WWE -esque mean streak to maul blockers when the Colts run off tackle.
Third Round, 87
It’s been years since the Colts have had the quick, penetrating defensive tackle they covet. Since Montae Reagor, Larry Tripplett and Corey Simon were playing together in 2005 there’s been a revolving door of disappointment between ends Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis. Nevis could be the guy the solution, as he has excellent quickness and powerful hands to shed blockers and get into the backfield. He doesn’t project as a two-gap run stuffer, but should be disruptive in the backfield.
Fourth Round, 119
Rucker is an atypical pick for the Colts. Not only does he have a laundry list of off-the-field problems, he’s a defensive back who isn’t shorter than the equipment manager.
Overall Draft Grade: A-
Another excellent draft by one of the best front offices in football. Rebuilding their offensive line should help keep the Colts in the upper echelon of the NFL standings for the rest of Peyton Manning’s career.
