Summer reading program building stronger readers

SEBRING -- The Highlands County Summer Reading Program is winding down as the new school year approaches. The program is an ongoing attempt to provide students an opportunity to improve their reading skills over the course of brief summer session in which students will spend a few hours working with experienced instructors.

The program is headed by the state Department of Education, which asks participating school districts to serve, or offer, the program to third grade students scoring at the level one tier of the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT).

"Level one scoring students are invited to attend the reading program. We offer the program to students who are recommended for retention. The last two weeks of the program students are tested with a test called the Stanford Achievement Test. If third graders have proficiency on the Stanford 10 they have good cause to be placed in fourth grade in lieu of the FCAT reading scores," explained Director of Elementary Education Joyce McClelland.

McClelland is has been director of the summer reading program for the past three years and is confident that this year the passing rate will return to a higher level.

"Up until last year we were at a 60 percent to 70 percent passing rate. Last year we fell to about 40 percent, but it is because they've been doing better in the school year. There has been a significant gain in passing over 10 percent," McClelland said.

The schedule for this summer's program was changed slightly from previous years. Students attend either Fred Wild Elementary, Lake Placid Elementary or Park Elementary four days a week from 7:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. Students are bused to the three schools and given breakfast and lunch during the day along with a traditional school recess.

"This schedule allows the parents, students, and staff to have a three-day weekend and it has worked out a lot better this summer," McClelland said.

The highly trained teachers spend the day breaking the students' studies into different categories to keep them interested in the work. The students spend 30 to 40 minutes in the Media Center working on the Tickets to Read software.

"They have to read passages, identify sight words, and things like that. When they get sections correct they get these little tickets; the tickets go toward their virtual clubhouse. They build it up add stuff and decorate it how they like," said Cracker Trail Elementary teacher Tanya Koehler.
