The new normal: leadership communication

Daniel Munslow, director at brand engagement agency, Talk2Us, was invited by the International Association of Business Communicators to present a case study of the company’s communication model involving leadership in the communication process to deliver real business benefits. The presentation was delivered at the World Conference in San Diego in June, which was attended by 1 400 top-level communicators from around the world. His focus was on the new communication requirements of chief executives and other business leaders. He shares these insights with Leadership. It goes without saying that the CEO is the leader of the business and he or she is expected to be an excellent communicator – not simply a good businessperson. It means much more than merely being eloquent when talking to stakeholders: it means having the ability to find the relevance in the message and the hook that will make employees engage with the brand. At the 2001 World Economic Forum in Davos, 95% of CEOs polled identified knowledge management as critical to organisational success. This includes the areas of human capital, strategy, information technology, benchmarking, brand management, and organisation capability. These are principally the most important factors for success in business – today, and for the future. Many will recall Dale Carnegie’s seminal quote: “Winning business is only 15% knowledge and 85% attitude, passion, enthusiasm, listening, leadership, enjoyment, trust and respect.” For business today, the drivers of value creation in the new-age economy are human capital, brands, intellectual property, innovation, and organisation capabilities. The emotional element comprises all the softer issues: customer experience, brand engagement, reputation management, internal communication and leadership communication. These intangible variables have often been neglected in the past, and seen as more difficult to measure and manage. This is changing, as business is starting to place more focus on them. Section 8 of King III Report deals with the governance of stakeholder relationships. Its principle tenets are that communication is a board responsibility, where it sets out to proactively deal with stakeholder relationships by developing a strategy and formulate policies for the management of relationships with each stakeholder grouping.
