House update continued « Alaska Niki
Things have been happening so fast. We had a wonderful suprise with our friends joining in and helping get the foundation poured, walls put up and getting the floor on. All of this in 3 days. I can’t hardly believe it. It remindes me of the barn raising I have read about. I thank each and every one of you for your generousity. I don’t know how much we would have gotten done by now, but I believe it would not have been this fast or awesome. We love you all.
The foundation is ready for cement. The house sets on the cement foundation, leaving a dirt floor. This area will be a 4 1/2-5′ crawl space with plumbing. We will later insulate then lin the floor and walls with heavy plastic to keep the water out, then install air vents to keep things dry. The guys getting ready to start spreading the cement into the frame of the foundation. Eli with wheelbarrow, Jim in front of Eli. Anthony is directing and Tony is walking away in the lower left corner.
Walls started to go up on the foundation. Talk about hot weather and fast work. The group showed up just as I was getting up in the morning. Eli had taken a break to visit with Franz and Inge and do a little fishing. Next thing I know, hammers were pounding, saws were running and we could not get hold of Eli. We kept calling and calling, but he had turned his phone off.Walls going upWhen we did get hold of Eli more people arrived. Then things got really crazy. Our tempetures got into the high 70′s and low 80′s. Eli was running into town for supplies, our road near the airport was being worked on so there was a 20-30 min. wait before getting through. Remember up here, we allow at least 1 1/2 hours to make a fast trip to town. Eli was running to Kenai wich is 12 miles farther away and this is tourist season. So it takes a lot longer to do ‘the town’ thing.more walls going upWhen we did get hold of Eli more people arrived. Then things got really crazy. Our tempetures got into the high 70′s and low 80′s. He said taking K beach bridge access was a nightmare. The dip netters are on the beach. I went into town the following evening, could not believe how many truck, cars pulling boats were waiting to launch. They were backed up about 1/2 a mile. The river was wall-to-wall dip netters. I agree nightmare, but an interesting one. worth taking pictures of if I had the camera.
