Roku 2 adds gaming to its features list

The video streaming solution for those who may be sick of cable charges, Roku, has been emerging as a plausible alternative.  Competing with Apple TV, Roku has just announced their next iteration of their streaming-to-TV box, the Roku 2.  With it, they are beginning a gaming initiative.

The new Roku 2 systems are compatible with a new remote that has standard video controls and a traditional “A” and “B” button on the lower end.  The remote mimics the Nintendo Wii Remote with Motion Plus, as the remote sports accelerometers and a gyroscope.  The remote can be held sideways to resemble a more traditional controller, just like the Wii Remote.

The Roku 2 comes in three versions.  Only the most expensive version (Roku 2 XS) at $99.99 comes with one controller remote along with a free copy of Angry Birds.  If you buy either of the two cheaper versions, you receive a standard remote (no special game controls or motion sensors), but you can purchase the enhanced controller remote separately for $29.99 which also comes with a 2GB microSD memory card for storing game and channel data.

Roku hasn’t yet disclosed what games are coming to the service.  How many games are available on service right now (besides Angry Birds) isn’t noted anywhere.  You can purchase a Roku unit either through their website or at Best Buy retailers.
