'Coupon Coach' to hold workshop at Tarpon library
In today's tough economy, couponing has become a popular way to save money as families and individuals look for ways to trim their cost of living.
Bargain hunters soon learn, however, effective shopping involves more than just clipping coupons from the newspaper. Christi Bassford, "the Coupon Coach," wrote a book detailing secrets of successful coupon shopping. She designed a sorting pouch and organizational box kit with important tips for those who want to be prepared to shop.
"Nowadays there is a lot of excitement in the couponing experience," said Bassford. Her book, "Christi the Coupon Coach: Couponing made simple," is available at Amazon.com and her website, www.christithecouponcoach.com .
Bassford was invited to present a workshop on modern-day coupon shopping at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 19, at the Tarpon Springs Public Library, 138 E. Lemon St.
She designed her method of finding bargains and sorting or preparing coupons in a step-by-step process, so as not to overwhelm and discourage a person from using coupons.
"This is not extreme shopping, where people find themselves with hundreds of rolls of bathroom tissue and no place to store it," she said. "Good coupon shopping should provide people with 80 percent or more savings on grocery bills."
One of her most important rules is to wait for sales but don't horde. Instead, buy a reasonable amount of items. "When sale items are found, just buy six to eight of any one item. There is no need to be extreme."
Bassford buys six to eight Sunday newspapers to stock her coupon bin and saves the flyers she gets in the mail and at shops.
The savvy shopper matches manufacturer's and store coupons with buy-one-get-one free sales, so they hardly pay anything for some items, she explained.

Some of her best advice is "prepare before you head for the grocery, know what you need, your coupons should be your shopping list."
Coupon users should play fair: It's fine to download coupons from websites, but it's illegal to copy them; do not try to pass off expired coupons because that only gives coupon shoppers a bad name; and don't clean off shelves or take most of the coupons in the little holders attached to store shelves.

Grilling Corn on the Cob - HotCouponWorld.com
One of my family’s summertime staples is corn on the cob. But my usual way of cooking it (stovetop in boiling water) heats up the kitchen and can make the corn mushy. Grilling the corn makes it easy and keeps the heat out of the kitchen. Plus the flavor and texture of grilled corn on the cob is delicious. There are a few different ways to approach grilling whole ears of corn and some people swear by a charcoal or campfire but I grilled the corn on my gas grill just fine. Here is a technique for grilling cobs of corn on your grill!
Start by turning your grill up to high and let it heat up. Next trim the loose husk and silks off the cob. These may easily catch on fire and char your corn. Soak the corn in water for 15 minutes. This will allow the corn to soak up moisture and keep it from drying out.
Once your grill is well heated, turn the heat down to medium and put the cobs right on the grill. You will need to turn it every 5 minutes or so.
Grill the corn about 35 minutes or until it looks like this.
You’ll think the corn is destroyed given how black the husks get but you will get used to how long you prefer to cook yours.
Take the corn off the grill and carefully remove the husks and silks. I used an oven mitt the entire time so I could eat my corn hot off the grill. Your finished product will look like the picture below.
Butter and salt as desired.
You can probably follow a very similar plan if you are cooking over charcoal. Not only is grilled corn great to eat on its own but tastes great in salads and main dishes as well. If you have any tried and true techniques to grill corn, please feel free to share them below!
