'Harry Potter's' midnight magic

MILLBURY  —  Magic was clearly in the air Thursday as fans equipped with wands, broomsticks, and lightning-shaped scars came out in droves to see the midnight showing of the final movie of the "Harry Potter" franchise.

Blackstone Valley Cinema in Millbury was packed with "Muggles" in the hours leading up the premiere of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows: Part 2," with all 14 theaters showing the movie to sold-out crowds.

Lily Nguyen, 23, was one of the first to arrive for the showing, at 4:30 p.m. "The employees were like, 'Really? You're here already?'" she said.

Nguyen brought pillows and blankets, and spent the hours in the lobby munching on pizza and people-watching.

As it got closer to midnight, fans in costumes swarmed the lobby, anxious to watch the final battle between good and evil - the showdown between young protagonist Harry Potter and the dark wizard Lord Voldemort.

Molly Burman, 21, wearing a thick brown beard and a large pillow-stuffed belly, was convincing as loveable half-giant Hagrid. "It's very bittersweet," said Burman. "I really want to watch this movie, but I don't want it all to end."

The film is the finale of a phenomenon that started 13 years ago, when British author JK Rowling published the first novel in the series, "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone." The books have been transformed into a film in 2001, and had a cumulative success at the box office of over $ 6.3 billion.

Fans were able to watch the characters teenagers - and the actors of celebrities - mature before their eyes.

"I grew up with Harry," said Christina Pearman, 23. Pearman said the series gave an overview of welcome in a fantasy world. "Who does not want them to have a wand?" she said.

Valerie Laurence, 43, said she prepared for the midnight showing by spending the past week watching all of the movies in the series again.

"For me, 'Harry Potter' is about the magic and the mystery," said Laurence, wearing a shirt emblazoned with the phrase "Practice Witchcraft." "You can be a kid again, and anything can happen."

As the clock struck midnight, excited screams were heard throughout the theaters. Many fans came prepared with tissues, knowing that the movie would be emotional for them.

Sam Ryel, 20, an employee managing the lines, said almost the entire theater staff was working the midnight showing.
