Riverdale's Glenburn estate wins county grant

Morris County Freeholders announced the borough will receive $174,402 from the trust to continue repairs to the interior of the home on Hamburg Turnpike.

This would be the sixth construction grant from this office. Since 2006 the funds for construction projects have totaled $714,680.

Some of the projects funded over the years have included the completion of a preservation plan for the site and the stabilizing and restoring of the barn and home.

Specific work at the barn included construction of man doors and exterior repainting. Work at the house included removal of the boiler chimney, replacement of the metal roofing at the bay window, and rebuilding of the south entrance.

The 2010 grant covered the kitchen renovations; installation of a bathroom; upgrades to the entrance of the house; repair of the roof, chimney, and masonry; and installation of emergency lighting and fire detection.

This most recent grant will assist with the interior restoration of the house, including repair of interior doors and windows, as well as stabilization and roof repair at the store building.

Riverdale Land Conservancy member Ross Kushner said the inside of the home still has to be completed. He said "the home is nice to look at but it would be much better if people could get in there and do things in it. And that is what this all about."

Kushner said this county has been great so far.

"They have given us a lot of cash towards (repairing the home), and it’s been step-by-step but it has been steady progress," said Kushner. "Hopefully this will make the house usable."

This home was once part of a 300-acre piece of land that was owned by the Van Ness family over 150 years ago. The Van Ness family members were among the first settlers in this area.

This home was built in 1816 by the Simon H. Van Ness, when it was first known as Glenburn. It was sold out of the family’s name in 1868.

This existing property sits on 5.67 acres. In 2003 there was a proposal to redevelop the site but the borough was fortunate enough to receive approximately $1.2 million from the state Green Acres program and $1.2 million from the Morris County Open Space Fund to help purchase it.

Frank Pinto Jr., director of Morris County Department of Planning & Development, said the county has given out $2.57 million in grants to help preserve 29 projects around the county this year alone.

Over the years, the trust has supported 185 projects at 66 sites that were worth over $12.95 million, said Pinto.
