Education digest: Event raises money for school network

The annual NativityMiguel Scholarship Fundraiser raised $400,000 at a dinner at the Chase Park Plaza earlier this month to help low-income students attend private college prep high schools.

The money will help more than 260 students this coming school year bridge the gap between tuition and what their families can afford. The event was a collaboration of ACCESS Academies, which supports three NativityMiguel schools (Central Catholic Academy, Holy Trinity Academy and St. Cecilia Academy), plus three independent NativityMiguel schools (De La Salle Middle School, Loyola Academy and Marian Middle School) , along with 21 area college-prep high schools.

At the event, Blanche Touhill, the former chancellor of the University of Missouri-St. Louis, was honored for nearly 50 years of work in the field of education. Seven schools in St. Louis are part of the NativityMiguel network, including Loyola Academy and Marian Middle School.

MISSOURI SCHOOLS > State seeks feedback on proposed standards • The Missouri education department will hold a second forum Tuesday to collect feedback on its proposed revisions to the Missouri School Improvement Program, which sets standards for schools statewide. The forum will be from 9:30 a.m. to noon at the University of Missouri-St. Louis in the Millennium Student Center, 1 University Boulevard, in Century Rooms A and B.

SOUTHERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY > Businessman joins Board of Trustees • The head of a Fairview Heights construction management firm has been added to the Southern Illinois University Board of trustees. Mark Hinrichs, president of IMPACT Strategies, was appointed by Gov. Pat Quinn the board, which serves the SIU system, including campuses in Springfield, Alton, Edwardsville and Carbondale. Hinrichs replaces the late Keith Sanders.

CLAYTON SCHOOLS > Board approves two-year contract for interim chief • The Clayton Board of Education unanimously approved a two-year contract for interim Superintendent Sharmon Wilkinson last week. In January, the board indicated that it planned to appoint Wilkinson as interim superintendent after Mary Herrmann asked to be released from her contract. Wilkinson has been an administrator in the district since 1996. She currently serves as assistant superintendent for human resources and student services.

Wilkinson will assume her new position Friday. Her annual salary will be $190,000, with a $10,000 annual car allowance. Herrmann's salary was $220,000 with a $9,000 car allowance.

Clean the World Foundation: Chase Park Plaza helps Clean the World

St. Louis’ legendary Chase Park Plaza has partnered with Clean the World to collect and recycle hotel soaps, shampoos, conditioners, lotions and gels to help fight the global spread of preventable diseases. The soaps collected each day from the 338 guest rooms at The Chase will be shipped to Clean the World for recycling and distribution around the world. The Chase Park Plaza anticipates collecting nearly 2,920 lbs. of soap and 2,178 lbs. of bottled amenities each year. “The Chase Park Plaza is an historic property and St. Louis and it is real jewel in the crown for our Clean the World hospitality partnership program” says Shawn Seipler, executive director at Clean the World. “Our mission at Clean the World is consistent – we’re recycling soap to save lives – and we welcome the addition of Chase Park Plaza, a  Preferred Hotel Group property, to our growing family of hotel partners dedicated to advancing our global hygiene revolution.
