Wretched Wallpaper Removal

Most Suffield residents I know have removed wallpaper at least once.  Everyone had pointers and advice, followed by their own stories of wallpaper hell.

“Use a steamer.  It’s still messy, but it works.”

“Hot water and vinegar.”

“Pay someone.”

“Prep with a Paper Tiger and treat with Dif...the gel, not the watery stuff.”

The sight of flowered wallpaper and shapes with outdated colors is difficult to stomach. You step out of the shower, gaze at the unsightly decor and make note. This stuff’s gotta go. It’s bubbled in some areas, ripped in others. If you look closely, the inconsistencies and uneven lining are visible. At this point, it doesn’t matter. You can’t take it anymore. You’ve made the decision and the commitment to remove it.

After a few trips to Suffield Hardware and questions with co-owner George Fields, I was properly supplied, walking out eager to conquer the wretched wallpaper.

The first room had a rose and vine border. Prepping is essential but tedious. Move the furniture in the middle of the room, remove the light switch covers, take down curtains, cover the floors ... then pick up the phone.

I quickly realized I’d taken on a task that required immediate assistance. My friend Carol came over to offer her help, advice and expertise. Within minutes, we’re singing to Bob Seger, scraping wallpaper and patching holes. As the step ladders rotated around the room, she answered questions and showed me a few shortcuts.

We went over the wallpaper with a Paper Tiger. It pokes tiny holes into the paper, allowing the removal solution to saturate the glue. The longer you let it soak, the better. I later realized it’s easier to begin ripping the surface paper, then spray the solution. Although pathetic, I never thought an afternoon of happiness was based on how well wallpaper peeled.

Next was to putty the holes, wash the walls and sand a few spots.  Carol talks as fast as my dog eats. She stepped in, then accidentally dumped, an entire bucket of water on the floor. A tattered area rug makes a great sponge. As she spackled the holes, large and small, I watched. While she rambled about teenage escapades, large pieces of wet putty smacked the wooden floor. I paused and stared. Without changing her rhythm she smiles and said, “Lighten up. It’s easier to pick up once it’s dry.
