Long-serving Cumbrian doorman-DJ marking retirement with fun day
Tony Pearce has been a DJ/doorman at The Whittington Cat for 18 years and is bowing out.
“I’m calling it my Last Stand,” he said.
“All in all I’ve worked in various pubs and clubs in town for over 25 years. I’ve now got kids coming and telling me that their mams and dads are asking after me because I was doing this when the were courting.”
To say his farewell to the pub scene, Tony is behind a day of fun and frolics to raise money for the palliative care unit and the Henderson Suite at the West Cumberland Hospital.
“There are so many demands on people’s time and money but I couldn’t think of two worthier causes,” he said.
The fun day at the Cat on Lowther Street this Saturday includes a children’s fun day with face painting, party games and a youngsters’ disco.
Professor Boffin will be helping things go with a bang with his fun-packed science experiments. With his lab coat, goggles and long beard, the Professor is actually science teacher Terry Harvey-Chadwick, who has set up his own business providing science parties for schools.
In the evening it’s party time for the grown-ups with fundraising activities including raffles and auctions.
Prizes include signed Haven and Workington Town shirts, ten tickets to any Saracens home game at Wembley and vouchers for pubs, shops, restaurants and a 30-minute fish spa.
There’s a competition to guess the number of glass beads in a demijohn where people can win two tickets to the X-Factor at Carlisle Racecourse this Sunday.
Tony will also be having his legs waxed for charity.
“I can still remember the first 45rpm single I ever bought with my own money – it was Blockbuster by The Sweet, which I bought from Woolworths. It cost 50p!” said Tony.
