Neighbors describe store clerk who was shot as 'sweet guy'

FITCHBURG  —  Wiping tears away from their eyes, several Cleghorn residents said yesterday they were trying to make sense of what happened to a longtime variety store clerk who was shot Wednesday night after locking up for the night.

Scott E. Person, 40, of 781A Fitchburg State Road, Ashby, was shot in the head about 11:30 p.m. in a parking lot across the street from J.V.'s Package and Variety Store, at 128 Fairmount St., where he worked.

"Unbelievable," Luz Rivera, a resident of the neighborhood, said yesterday morning.

Mr. Person was taken to HealthAlliance Hospital - Leominster Campus. He was transferred to UMass Memorial Medical Center - University Campus in Worcester. Mr. Person was in grave condition yesterday, according to Worcester District Attorney Joseph D. Early Jr.

"This is so sad because he's such a sweet guy," said Ms. Rivera, adding that everyone in the neighborhood knows Mr. Person because everyone shops at the local convenience store. "He's always helping Santo" Viola, the store's owner.

Mr. Person worked as a clerk at the store for several years, according to neighbors. Mr. Viola has owned the corner store since 1986, they said. The store typically closes at 11 p.m.

Fitchburg police went to the store around 11:30 p.m. after receiving a 911 call reporting a person had been shot outside the store.

The shooting occurred near a wooded area diagonally across the street from the store, at Fairmount and Clarendon streets. Authorities taped off a short section of street across from the store with yellow crime scene tape while they investigated. The victim's car, an older model Toyota Corolla missing a front window, was parked inside the blocked-off area yesterday morning. A police dog was brought in to search.

"Scott, he's such a nice person," Ms. Rivera said. "He was always very polite, and very respectful. He worked almost every day."

Several suspects are being sought, according to police.

Olga Marquez and Noraida Morales tried to figure out why anyone would want to harm Mr. Person.

"I heard the scanner saying gunshots," Ms. Marquez said. Her first thought was that there was a robbery at the store and that she hoped the owner was not hurt. Ms. Marquez said Mr. Person took pride in his work, and always looked out for neighborhood children.

"Always, sweeping, always laughing," Ms. Morales said.
