Cinco de Mayo And my Dad

Six years ago, my dad died on Cinco de Mayo.  I still miss him so much.  He is not replaceable, and if I could I would do almost anything to bring him back.  I was lucky.  I had him for almost 80 years.  My dad was a red neck from Missouri.  You would be surprised at what a red neck with an eighth grade education can do if he sets his mind to it.  To look at my dad, you would never know he was an A-6 plane mechanic and plane captain.  His speciality was flight test.  He readied A-6 after A-6 for combat.  The Vietnam War was quite real in my house becauses we almost never saw my dad at home during it.  One of my favorite things growing up was the smell of jet fuel when my dad came home.  This was because he would come home early to get rid of the smell.  Then I would get to see him. 

Dad’s other big project was his garden, more of a mini farm really.  He bought the biggest lot on our street and filled it in with trees and plants of all sorts.  His apricots grew as large as peaches.  After a while, neighbors got tired of seeing him coming, since he always brought them fruits and vegtables.It flooded the priests at the church each year with apples. Apples were a kind of defeat if, since our time is not cold enough to push the genre he really loved.

While my father's death was quickly these things go, it was not difficult or easy, and perhaps not even have to happen next. The religion of my father has always been important to him, and he kept his soul in the preparation. But he was not quite finished but when he died. To make matters worse, my mother was put in hospital after knee surgery, and I was struck by severe cellulitis at the same time.  I wasn’t even supposed to walk.  But I went to his funeral anyway.  My dad died of pneumonia, the thing he least wanted to die of.  God has a funny sense of humor.  Needless to say, dad’s death did not speed up my recovery.

Dad married a girly girly girl and raised three daughters.  One is a girly girl (the smartest and the meanest), one a tomboy and one somewhere in between.  Strangely enough, all of dad’s grandchildren are boys.

With dad’s death, Cinco de Mayo is now a sad time for me.  This is difficult in California, for this is a happy holiday that is widely celebrated.  It has become the day of the dead for me.  So please understand if I don’t join in your celebrations or look sad.  It is not that I don’t like Cinco de Mayo.  I just don’t like remembering events of that terrible Cinco de Mayo of six years ago.
