Taming summer's oily face problem

It's summertime, and the livin' is greasy.

Heat and humidity don't just zap your psyche. They can make your face - and other parts of your body - feel like an oil slick in need of a cleanup.

"Many studies have shown that humidity does affect sebum (oil) secretion rates," said dermatologist Leslie Baumann, M.D,, author of ($16, 515 pp., Bantam). "The increased heat makes the sebum lipids more fluid so they drip and run more, increasing the perception of oiliness."

You also may notice increased acne. The skin constantly regenerates itself, shedding keratinocytes - protein-packed cells that form the outer layer. This can clog pores - one source of acne eruptions. Bacteria in the pores also can bring on pimples.

"I believe that increased humidity also leads to acne, but this has not been proven," Baumann said.

Sunscreen and makeup products with a powder base help absorb oil, Marmur said, but she recommends you think less about attacking the oil and more about attacking the sweat.

The simplest solution may be to use blotting papers.

There's a plethora of other temporary fixes on the market, from mild cleansers, exfoliating gels and pads to clay masks and prescription drugs. Oil mattifiers have become a popular category.
