7 schools up for state intervention

24-Hour News 8 has learned that the state plans to announce its plans for possible intervention in seven failing schools Friday morning.

State law requires the state Board of Education to intervene in chronically underperforming schools that fail to show improvement for six consecutive years. 24-Hour News 8 has learned the six of the seven schools facing intervention are in the Indianapolis Public Schools system. The seventh is in northern Indiana’s Gary Community School Corp. The schools are:

Arlington Community High School – Indianapolis Public Schools Broad Ripple Magnet High School for the Performing Arts – Indianapolis Public Schools Emma Donnan Middle School – Indianapolis Public Schools Emmerich Manual High School – Indianapolis Public Schools George Washington Community High School – Indianapolis Public Schools Thomas Carr Howe Community High School – Indianapolis Public Schools Theodore Roosevelt Career and Technical Academy – Gary Community School Corporation

Intervention options open to the state Board of Education board include:

Merging the school with another school. Implementing Indiana Department of Education (IDOE) recommendations. Implementing other options offered in public hearings. Revising the school’s improvement plan. Assigning a turnaround school operator overseen by the state to takeover all or part of the school.

“Some of those schools will be provided some support. Others of those schools will have turnaround school operators placed in them, placed in what we refer to as state takeover,” Tony Bennett, state superintendent of education, said earlier in the week in an interview with 24-Hour News 8’s Mike Ahern for his WNDY program One on One.

Eleven schools that had been on the brink of state intervention were able to show adequate progress during this past school year to avoid it. They are:

South Bend: Washington and Riley High Schools; Bendix School. Lake Ridge: Calumet High School. School City of Hammond: Hammond High School and Morton Senior High School. Fort Wayne: North Side and South Side High Schools. School City of East Chicago: East Chicago Central High School. Indianapolis Public Schools: Northwest High School.
