Community Credit Union warns of phone scam
LEWISTON — Community Credit Union issued a statement Thursday warning recipients of automated “vishing” phone calls to not provide personal or account information.
The credit union statement said it has received several reports of fraudulent recorded phone calls advising individuals that their debit or credit card has been compromised and asking them to enter personal information, such as their Social Security number and mother’s maiden name.
Vishing uses caller ID spoofing to display a possible trusted phone number to the caller. It is typically used to steal credit or debit card numbers and other personal information used in identity theft schemes. The scam is difficult for legal authorities to monitor or trace.
The Community Credit Union statement said it is working with law enforcement personnel to track down the source of the attacks.
The credit union advised members and the general public to:
* Not give out personal information on the telephone, via email or text message.
* Ask for the person’s name and phone number and tell them you will call them back (the caller usually hangs up when this happens).
* Hang up and call your financial institution immediately through a phone number from a source that you know is legitimate.
