The Manawatu Jets haven't won a National Basketball League playoff game since 1992 and they weren't able to break that duck when they went down 89-76 to the Nelson Giants at the Trafalgar Centre last night.
Considering the Jets got the cash against Nelson twice this season and had won during their last two visits to the Giants' gym, they would have had every right to go in to the game with plenty of self-belief.
But, self-belief can only get you so far and Jets coach Ryan Weisenberg was left to lament an off-night from the floor from his side as the Jets made only 13 of their 23 free throws and shot at 28 per cent from three-point land.
"The boys played hard. We had a couple of key injuries at the beginning and things kind of went downhill from there," he said. "It killed us shooting 57 per cent from the free-throw line."
Jeremiah Trueman caught a finger in the eye early on and valiantly returned to the floor to nail a team-high 23 points, while speedy point guard Chris Hagan suffered back spasms and was limited to only seven points.
The Jets were making their first trip to the playoffs since 2003, while it wouldn't feel like a post-season in the NBL without the Giants and that experience was telling, Weisenberg said. "They're a time-tested playoff team ... Nelson, they upped the level of play and we just didn't make it."
As regular as clockwork, Jets centre Nick Horvath checked in with yet another double-double as he racked up 13 points and 10 rebounds.
However, it was the man marking Horvath that swung the game in the direction of the home side.
Giants big man Darryl Dora came to the party at the right time with his first double-double of the season as he grabbed 26 points and pulled down 13 valuable rebounds.
"Horvath's the top rebounder in the league and he's going to make you look bad if you don't prepare well and work hard," Dora said.
"The Jets really go after it on the boards and that was one thing we knew had to improve if we wanted to avoid another loss to them.
"I took a lot on myself this week and I felt good out there tonight, real strong."
Nelson out-rebounded the Jets 37-30, which was one of the few times a team had beaten the Manawatu side in that statistical category this season and it proved vital.
Veteran hoopster Phill Jones, who was playing his 33rd NBL playoff game, banked 23 points, including a perfect eight from eight from the free-throw line.
