PerkStreet: Avoiding Financial Pitfalls When Planning a Couples Vacation
There are so many landmarks that are meaningful in a relationship. The first date. The first kiss. The first anniversary. The first vacation together. Vacation? Yep.If you think about it, your first vacation together is a pretty monumental moment. It marks the first time you two put your relationship first when it comes to a real chunk of free time. And if you don't have much vacation time like my girlfriend and I, that's a pretty serious step to take. Vacations are all about letting loose, forgetting your worries and doing exactly what you want. So how do you make sure the vacation goes smoothly when you both inevitably have different ideas about what, exactly, you should be doing with this much-sought-after free time? Understand it's time to become planners
There's a reason all the movies show family vacations involving strict regiments and carefully scheduled timelines. Going on a trip together without either blowing a ton of money or getting into an argument requires some planning. Depending on your dispositions, you might be able to get away with a rough outline of a plan--but, if you're both given to going crazy and blowing money, you'd better make a more clear-cut plan.
Agree on activities beforehand
The two of you are going to have different ideas of what you should being doing with this free time. As with all things in a relationship, this is going to require some compromise, especially because one of you is going to want to do something more expensive than the other wants to do. Be fair; split the costs and put each other first. But do yourselves a favor and get all the debate over with before your flight so you can actually do the most important vacation thing of all: Relaxing.
Build a vacation budget
Popular radio personality and financial advisor Dave Ramsey says the best thing to do when you need money is go to work. Conversely, if you're not at work, you're much more likely to burn though money quickly. Couple that with the fact that you'll be in a new place and looking for a good time and you've got a recipe for financial disaster. Figure out exactly how much you're going to spend on your vacation including travel, accommodations, souvenirs and meals. Agree on that number and don't waiver when you've got your sunglasses on later.
