Certification Programs

The International Kitchen Exhaust Cleaning Association (IKECA) currently offers two certification programs - one for cleaning and one for inspection. The Certified Exhaust Cleaning Specialist (CECS) and Certified Exhaust System Inspector (CESI) certification programs test candidates knowledge of industry codes, safety procedures and mechanical systems for the purpose of certifying individuals to properly inspect and clean kitchen exhaust systems according to NFPA 96.

Certified Exhaust Cleaning Specialist

An individual who passes the IKECA CECS Certification Exam shall be designated as a "Certified Exhaust Cleaning Specialist (CECS)."

Who Should Take the Exam / Eligibility Requirements

Any owner, manager, or employee of a company actively engaged in the cleaning of commercial kitchen exhaust systems is eligible to take the IKECA certification exam, provided that:

The company the individual is affiliated with is a member in good standing of the International Kitchen Exhaust Cleaning Association (IKECA); or, The company the individual is affiliated with agrees to comply with IKECA Standards & Practices and meets IKECA membership qualifications. Duration of Certification

Upon passing the IKECA exam, an individual shall be certified for a period of one year.

In order to be re-certified on an annual basis, the individual must earn a total of four (4) Continuing Education Units during the period January 1 – December 31, and submit a re-certification application along with the renewal fee of $50 to IKECA Headquarters. Individuals who do not earn the required CEUs, will be required to re-take the examination in order to maintain certification.

Description of the Examination

IKECA administers a multiple-choice, written examination. The length of the exam is 150 questions. The time provided to complete the exam is three (3) hours. The content of the examination is based primarily on industry codes and standards. A complete list of the codes from which exam questions are derived is printed later in this document. This list should form the basis of your studies. Some questions are based on common industry practice and field experience. Persons with little or no field experience will most likely have great difficulty with such questions.
