We took shelter in the lee of a small island on Basswood Lake and sized up our options.

Four of us, in two canoes, were trying to make a few miles and get back to our families in town that evening. But a ripping southeast wind seemed to have other ideas.

We bobbed in the protection of the island and consulted our maps. We weighed our options. Finally, we settled on a course that would take us from one island to another and another, and then to a wider crossing.

We nosed out into the full force of the wind and dug our paddles deep. One island at a time, taking stock of the waves at each interval, we forged our way down the lake.

It was hard work. It required a good deal of paying attention. It was not without some risk. And it was intensely satisfying when we rounded a final point and headed for a portage that would lead us out of the woods.

That is part of why we need wilderness, where once in a great while we can pit ourselves against a physical challenge with an unknown outcome and see what happens. Those were not the biggest waves we had ever traversed, nor the longest open-water passages. But for a few minutes on a July afternoon, we were operating near capacity to inch across a piece of the planet.

At other moments on our brief escape to canoe country, we derived just as deep a pleasure from sharing stories with old friends in camp, or drip-drying in the breeze after a cool swim or listening to an owl howl just above our tents one night.

It is this contrast between the raw physical requirements of wilderness travel and the unexpected moments of profound joy that keep a lot of us coming back.

Yes, your shoulders ache when you’re hauling a pack and a canoe across a long portage. But do you know how cool it is to be eye-level in a sprawling lake, watching the clouds ride the ripples you’re pushing ahead of you?

No, it is not particularly fun to stand ankle-deep in black muck, wrestling a Duluth Pack into submission in the canoe. But 10 minutes later, you’re paddling a shady shoreline when a bald eagle drops out of a white pine and you can hear his great wings carving the atmosphere.

Making wood on a hot July afternoon seems a lot like work, but the next morning at breakfast, when your buddy bakes you fresh blueberry muffins over a spirited fire, it all seems worthwhile.

These are the sweet contrasts of life on the trail. Nobody makes us come out here. We come knowing that we will get tired and dirty and hungry, and that we will be surprised and amazed and filled.
