Five new osprey chicks arrive at Annett Nature Center
Five young osprey chicks were introduced to their new Warren County home last week.The chicks, all from the Hayward, Wis., area, will call the hack tower at the Annett Nature Center home for the next couple of months.
The Warren County Conservation Board held a short welcome ceremony for the new osprey at the hack tower on July 15. About three dozen people participated in the ceremony.
Visitors had an opportunity to have an up-close look at the birds and take photographs with them during the welcome ceremony.
Theyre about 5 weeks old, said Missy Smith, a member of the Warren County Conservation Board, They have some siblings here. Yellow and orange came out of the same nest. Purple and green are siblings as well, they came out of a new nest this year.
The birds are identified by a bright non-toxic paint on its wings. Officials use the temporary paint to distinguish the birds apart until they gain their distinct feather patterns in a few months.
Volunteers will feed the young osprey until about early August, when they learn to fly and hunt for themselves.
Smith said an osprey has about a four- to six-foot wingspan and are double-jointed. Theyre also the only bird that goes completely under water to catch a fish, she said.
If youve ever had the privilege of seeing them dive for a fish, they get those wings all the way back and they get their talons all the way up and their head and they dive straight in, Smith said. They hit the water at about 50 mph. Its an amazing sight to see.
The chicks will stay at Annett Nature Center until about mid-September.
Then they migrate down to South America where theyll stay for about two to three years, Smith said. And then they have a little spring break youthful party and about the time they decide theyre going to be adults, they decide to setup a house and they start mating and they come back every year.
Officials said the first group of osprey that Warren County housed back in 2009 could come back next spring.
It was possible that the first group would have come back this spring and they didnt come back that we know of, Smith said. There is a better chance of them (coming back) next year. So usually April and May is when we look for them to be coming back. The males come back first and theyll setup the nest and then the females pick the nest they like the best.
