Cathedral ceilings open up secluded Frederick home

Along a quiet cul-de-sac at the end of a winding road through the woods, this three-level contemporary-style house on the lower slopes of Catoctin Mountain provides acres of seclusion. At the same time, tucked between Route 40 and Shookstown Pike, it also offers convenient access to Fort Detrick, the Golden Mile, and Gambrill State Park.

From a small flagstone-floored portico flanked by landscaped beds, the front entry opens to a foyer marked by laminate flooring that continues throughout this level. The tongue-and-groove cedar ceiling with exposed beams also extends throughout.

To the left of the foyer is a study/third bedroom with built-ins. At the rear, casement windows flank a large picture window, an arrangement echoed in most of the more than 90 windows and glazed doors found in the house.

Past the study, a long gallery hall leads past a sunken living room with recessed lights and a fan.

Opposite the living room, French doors open to a sunroom. A soaring, two-story space with a cathedral ceiling, a vinyl-tile floor, and a gas fireplace, the room also has sliding glass doors ready for the addition of a future deck.

Beyond the sunroom/living room, the hallway leads past the dining room to the kitchen. With a laminate floor enhanced by a vinyl-tile border, the dining room features recessed lights and chair rail.

Arranged around a center island, the kitchen has a vinyl-tile floor, oak cabinetry, and granite countertops. There also is a built-in desk. The cathedral ceiling features skylights and a fan. Appliances include double convection ovens and a Dacor cooktop with four gas burners and a griddle.

The breakfast area, also floored with vinyl, has a wall of built-ins offering storage, a wine rack, and a large rack for barware.

From the breakfast area, a sliding door leads out to an all-season porch. East-facing to catch the morning light, the space has sliding windows, a Trex deck and a cathedral ceiling with a fan. A side door off the porch opens to a Trex-surfaced deck that wraps the east and southern exposures.

Also off the kitchen are a full bathroom with laminate flooring and a tub/shower. The adjacent laundry/mudroom has vinyl tile, a utility sink, and a closet. It accesses a three-car garage with skylights.

The neutral-carpeted upper level offers the same tongue-and-groove cedar ceilings and exposed beams as the main level.

The master suite includes a light-filled bedroom with a cathedral ceiling, a ceiling fan, and a sitting area with a gas fireplace. There are two balconies off the sitting area: an interior one overlooking the sunroom and an exterior one tucked above the main entry.Off the bedroom are three closets, the largest a walk-in with skylights. The master bathroom also has a cathedral ceiling, a vinyl-tile floor, a dual vanity, and a garden tub with a whirlpool. The custom tile shower has glass block accents, dual heads, and a built-in seat. There also is a ceiling fan.

Staining Tongue & Groove Cedar Siding - DoItYourself.com Community ...

I've always either sprayed and back brushed or applied the stain with a brush. It's important to keep a wet edge - that means you need to stain just a few boards at time and run them all the way across. That prevents the stain from drying before you stain the next move. If the stain starts to dry before you stain the next section the result will be unsightly lap marks. I don't think it makes a whole lot of difference if you cut in before or after although cutting in before would allow you to not have to rebrush what you applied with the pad. I am a little concerned that just applying the stain with a pad might not apply enough stain to give long lasting results. The main thing is to maintain a wet edge - so stain just a few boards [top to bottom] at a time. I agree that a brush is probably the best way but I stained my shed with a 6" brush and painted myself and the drop cloth at the same time. The pad that I used is a 9" Shur-Line deck pad that can be used on siding, fences, concrete & brick. It has a heavier nap that holds more stain than the thinner nap used for painting interior walls. I finished half the job yesterday. I applied the stain with the pad to the siding, used the edge of the pad for the grooves and then back-brushed the grooves and siding.
